Everyone rode in a wagon at some point during their childhood right? Our family owned a red 1966 Dodge Dart before my time started on this earth, and a 1978 Dodge Aspen during my teen years. Many years later in my adult life I bought a 1970 Buick Estate Wagon with the delightful rear-facing 3rd-row seat with the hopes of restoring it. That project ended up being rather daunting thus any hope of seeing that Bamboo w/ Burnished Saddle Vinyl interior behemoth back on the road looking as good as it once did vanished.
Today, most wagons are luxury-brand wagons. By our count, there’s just one non-luxury, wagon available for sale in the U.S., and that’s the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen
It’s a nearly dead segment in the U.S. today, but look back about 40 years and you’ll find that small, midsize, and full-size station wagons were very popular. Rendered obsolete by consumers’ preference for minivans and crossovers, the wagon has all but disappeared from the American landscape—unless you count pricey European imports
Station wagons are really getting hot in the old car market, probably because most of the collectible hardtops and convertibles have already been taken. Sure, there are still plenty of coupes and sedans from the 50s and 60s, but these cars are just too dull for most folks in the hobby. Station wagons, on the other hand, can still be found here and there, but most have lived hard lives and usually need complete and costly restorations.
