ROAD TEST.....2012 Nissan Armada

Armada Platinum 4x4

The Nissan Armada is BIG there is no denying that & if BIG is what you need in an SUV I'd put this Nissan on your shopping list. Does it drive as big as it looks? Yes. Does it suck down gas as much as it looks like it would? Truth be told....yes. However, the reality is if you're buying something of this size it's because you've got a big troop to haul around to lots of different places & they've got friends, toys, & lots of other gear they want to bring along for the ride. Thus, you're really not expecting to get the same fuel mileage as a Camry Hybrid am I right?
On the inside the Armada seats 7 (or) 8 depending on the type of seating arrangement you choose for the second row of seats; a straight across standard bench or two captain's chair style bucket seats with a large console in between. The third row passengers have their own audio & temperature settings & there is plenty of room for all back there. The third row seats also have a split power folding up/down feature & there is an overhead console that runs the entire length of the car which features a wide screen DVD player, gaming console plug-ins, & again even more storage compartments for things like DVD's, games, or the wireless headphones & remote control that comes with the rear entertainment system. Of course the Armada Platinum also has the very easy to use HDD Navigation & BOSE audio system, heated leather seats & all the other goodies you'd want in an over $50k SUV. Having driven this luxuriously sturdy beast a few times to/from LA & San Diego I must say it is comfortable. Even my father, who is a devout fan of American made automobiles, gave the Armada kudos for how comfortable & roomy it is.
Now of course there is something I feel that product planners should have addressed on the Armada by now & that is the exterior design. This thing should have had at least what the industry calls a "minor refresh" by now. A new grille, redesigned bumpers, something to keep it looking somewhat fresh & updated. When comparing a 2004 model year Armada vs. today's the average untrained consumer eye probably won't see a whole lot of difference between the two. In my opinion if you're going to ask over $50k for something that averages around 18 MPG at least make it exciting to look at!
Armada Platinum

Pricing begins at about $40,000 including destination charge for the "SV" w/ no options, & tops out at roughly $56,500 including destination charge for the "Platinum 4WD" w/ the Capt'n Chairs pkg & floor/rear cargo mats.
EPA fuel mileage runs from about 13 city to 19 hwy. I averaged 16.5 MPG on one of my aforementioned trips to San Diego...YIKES!

2012 CHICAGO AUTO SHOW

The Chicago auto show is kind of the middle child between the Detroit & New York shows. In other words, car makers usually try to unveil what they think will be their hottest products and/or concepts at Detroit in January. If they're really behind schedule they will delay it until New York in April. However, there is always Chicago in February. Traditionally, Chicago gets the cars which feature a new trim level, or minor face lift etc..while major product revisions or the introduction of a completely new product are usually best kept for LA. Detroit, or New York.
So without further delay here's what they brought to the windy city this year....

ROAD TEST.....2012 VW Passat

Passat V6 SEL Premium

I really like this car. In fact, to tell the truth I've always been a big fan of the Passat however it's always been priced just a little out of my league. Well not anymore. The role of the more expensive VW sedan has been filled by the CC. Now that it's starting price is $20k, the Passat finally becomes a worthy competitor to the Accord, Camry, Sonata, & Altima.
On the inside is where you can tell the same bean counters responsible for cheapening the Jetta's interior also had their way with the Passat! However, I can live with that because the rest of this car is sooooo good. There is this new feature which other car manufacturers are starting to catch on to offering called a 3-quick lane change. It is perfect for those ultra lazy & selfish LA drivers who just cant be bothered to fully click the turn signal stalk up or down when they need to get into another lane. Just hold the stalk half way down only for a split second & release & the car will flash the appropriate outside turn indicator 3 times & 3 times only. You KNOW we are a lazy society of drivers if we literally have to make using the turn signal switch in our vehicle an easier task! Also, did I mention the trunk in the new Passat? My god I've seen 1971 Chrysler New Yorkers with smaller sized trunks!
Finally, if I had to find something I really didn't like about the 2012 Passat I can only think of two menial items. First, VW really needs to tone it down a notch with those HUGE ASS VW logo badge on the front grille! I mean did they learn NOTHING from the way the Phaeton bombed? Great car but NO ONE wants to pay upwards of $65k & have that HUGE ASS VW logo staring at them every day reminding them they just paid that much mula for a Volkswagen. Secondly, I'm not crazy about any of the colors the Passat comes in. Night Blue and/or Platinum Gray are the only two that are relatively decent in my book. So in a nutshell the Passat could use a better color palette to choose from.
Pricing begins at about $20,500 including destination charge for the "S" w/ no options, & tops out at roughly $34,000 including destination charge for the "SEL Premium" w/ all the bells & whistles. By comparison, only the Sonata GLS comes in cheaper by $200. The Altima 2.5 begins at $575 more, the Accord LX at $1,375 more, & finally the Camry L starts at nearly $1,925 more including applicable destination charges.
EPA fuel mileage estimates start as low as 20 for the city & top out at 43 on the hwy!

ROAD TEST.....2012 Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet

There is not enough room on this blog to correctly express my feelings about this obvious niche market vehicle. The ultimate goal of this blogger is to provide readers a few key "likes" and "dislikes" about various vehicles I've driven. This is rather hard to accomplish on certain vehicles where the dislikes FAR out number the likes. Hence the 2012 Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet convertible crossover. I'll just cut to the chase here & refer you to the "Thumbs Up" & "Thumbs Down" notes below & I think you'll get a pretty good idea where I stand with regards to this crossover convertible that stands alone in a vehicle segment nobody asked Nissan to create.
OMG this color...talk about adding insult to injury!

Pricing starts at just over $44,000 & tops out at roughly $47,500 w/ Navigation. EPA fuel mileage is estimated at 17 city / 22 hwy. Thirsty little bugger isn't it?
