CROSSOVERS...NO NOT CROSSDRESSERS

Boy what we automotive consumers will fall for these days when shopping for our next every day mode of transportation. I'm not sure when it happened exactly, but at some point during the last 10+ years some car manufacturer took what would normally be considered a wagon or hatchback increased its size slightly but kept the existing car chassis, slapped on bigger tires, & introduced the public to the Crossover Utility Vehicle (aka CUV).
That's all just fine & dandy but car manufacturers & their way overpaid marketing agencies have taken it to the extreme these days. By that I mean they are literally building smaller & smaller hatchbacks, putting 17" or 18" tires on them & BAM....it's our newwwww CROSSOVER unlike any other crossover available today! BUZZZZ!!! WRONG! They all look more alike these days than ever before. They have almost NO rear cargo room (something you should have enough of by the way if you're going to market it as a crossover UTILITY vehicle!), and really don't get all that great of gas mileage considering 90% of them for sale today are running on 4-cylinder engines.
To sum it all up, most manufacturers offer at least 3-4 CUV's in their current line; each not really that much bigger/smaller in size than their sibling, they aren't very utilitarian especially if you have kids, they don't get great gas mileage, and unless equipped with a turbo most are slower than shit! Now then, tell me again WHY the crossover is any better of a car then say a 1979 Ford Pinto Wagon?
